Whynter 14,000 BTU Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner with HEPA Filter, up to 500 sq ft

Description

The Whynter ARC-147WF/ARC-147WFH is a powerful 14,000 BTU (ASHRAE) / 10,000 BTU (SACC) dual hose portable air conditioner designed to efficiently cool spaces up to 500 sq. ft. - no permanent installation required. The dual hose system draws in fresh outside air through one hose and expels hot air through another, delivering faster, more efficient cooling while maintaining room pressure. Both models include a built-in HEPA and activated carbon filter to keep your air clean and fresh, plus a 24-hour programmable timer and remote control for seamless operation.

Whether you need cooling only or year-round climate control, there is a model for you: the ARC-147WF handles cooling, dehumidifying, and fan modes, while the ARC-147WFH adds a full heat mode using reverse air conditioning technology. With an impressively quiet operation of under 51 dB on low and a patented auto-drain function, these units are built for comfort and convenience in bedrooms, living rooms, home offices, and more.

Key Features

  • 14,000 BTU (ASHRAE) / 10,000 BTU (SACC) Cooling: Powerful output covers rooms up to 500 sq. ft. quickly and efficiently.
  • Dual Hose System: Dedicated intake and exhaust hoses cool faster and maintain room pressure better than single hose designs.
  • HEPA and Activated Carbon Filter: Removes airborne particles and odors for cleaner, fresher indoor air quality.
  • Three or Four Operational Modes: ARC-147WF offers Cool, Dehumidify, and Fan; ARC-147WFH adds a Heat mode for year-round comfort.
  • 134 Pints/Day Dehumidifying Capacity: Aggressively reduces humidity alongside cooling for a more comfortable environment.
  • Patented Auto-Drain Technology: Fully exhausts condensate automatically through the exhaust hose - no manual draining needed in most conditions.
  • Whisper-Quiet Operation: Noise level under 51 dB on low / under 54 dB on high - comparable to a quiet conversation.
  • 24-Hour Programmable Timer and Remote Control: Schedule cooling and adjust settings from across the room with ease.
  • Auto Restart After Power Outage: Resumes previous settings automatically after a power interruption.
  • Casters and Portable Design: Built-in wheels make it easy to move the unit from room to room as needed.
  • 1-Year Warranty / 3-Year Compressor Warranty: Backed by Whynter's multi-year protection for long-term peace of mind.
  • UL Listed: Certified for safety and compliance with U.S. electrical standards.

Model Options & Which to Choose

  • ARC-147WF (Cooling Only): Offers three modes - Cool, Dehumidify, and Fan. This is the right choice if you only need to cool your space during warmer months. Compact at 17.74"W and weighing 73.83 lbs, it is slightly lighter and narrower than the heat model. Best for users who want efficient summer cooling without a heat function.
  • ARC-147WFH (Cooling + Heat): Adds a fourth Heat mode using reverse air conditioning (heat pump), delivering 8,200 BTU of heating with a range of 61-77°F. Heating requires ambient outside temperatures above 41°F to operate efficiently. Slightly wider at 18.74"W and weighing 77 lbs, it also includes an upper gravity drain port for continuous drainage - a feature not found on the cooling-only model. Best for users who want year-round climate control from a single portable unit.

FAQ

What is the difference between the ARC-147WF and ARC-147WFH?

The ARC-147WF is a cooling-only model with three modes: Cool, Dehumidify, and Fan. The ARC-147WFH adds a Heat mode using reverse air conditioning (heat pump technology), making it suitable for year-round climate control. The WFH is also slightly wider (18.74" vs 17.74") and heavier (77 lbs vs 73.83 lbs), and it includes an upper gravity drain port for continuous drainage that the WF does not have. If you only need summer cooling, the WF is the choice; if you want heating capability as well, choose the WFH.

What does SACC BTU mean and why does it differ from ASHRAE BTU?

ASHRAE BTU (14,000 BTU) is measured under older lab conditions that do not fully account for the heat introduced into the room by the unit's own exhaust hose. SACC (Seasonally Adjusted Cooling Capacity) is the newer DOE standard that reflects real-world performance more accurately - for this unit, that is 10,000 BTU. When comparing portable ACs, always compare SACC ratings for an apples-to-apples comparison. The SACC rating of 10,000 BTU is appropriate for rooms up to 500 sq. ft.

Why is a dual hose system better than a single hose?

A single hose unit draws air from inside the room to cool the compressor, then exhausts it outside - this creates negative pressure and pulls warm unconditioned air in through gaps in doors and windows. A dual hose unit like this one uses a dedicated intake hose to pull outside air for compressor cooling and a separate hose to exhaust that hot air outside, avoiding the negative pressure problem. The result is faster cooling, better efficiency, and less strain on the unit overall.

Does this unit require any permanent installation?

No permanent installation is required. Simply attach the included dual hoses to the unit, install the adjustable window kit in a sliding or sash window (adjustable from 20" to 46"), and connect the hoses to the window kit. The unit rolls on casters for easy repositioning. No drilling, no wall mounting, and no HVAC professional needed.

How often do I need to clean or replace the HEPA and carbon filters?

Whynter recommends rinsing washable filters with warm water approximately every two weeks and allowing them to dry completely before reinstalling. The HEPA filter (model ARC-HEPAFIL-147WF-H) and the activated carbon filter (model ARC-CF-147WF-H) are available as replacement accessories through Whynter's authorized dealers. Regular filter maintenance ensures optimal air quality and unit performance.

Does the unit drain itself automatically?

Yes. The ARC-147WF and ARC-147WFH both feature Whynter's patented auto-drain technology, which exhausts condensate automatically through the exhaust hose in most conditions. In very high humidity environments, some water may accumulate and can be drained via the lower rear drain port. The ARC-147WFH also includes an upper gravity drain port for continuous drainage using a hose - ideal for humid climates or extended operation.

Can this unit be used to heat a room in winter?

Only the ARC-147WFH model includes a heat function. It uses reverse air conditioning (heat pump technology) to deliver 8,200 BTU of heating in a range of 61-77°F. Note that the heat function requires ambient outdoor temperatures above 41°F (5°C) to operate effectively - below this threshold, the heat pump cannot extract sufficient heat from outside air. The ARC-147WF (cooling-only model) does not have a heat mode.
