VitalStim Plus Electrotherapy and sEMG Biofeedback System
Description
The VitalStim Plus is a professional-grade electrotherapy system that combines neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) with sEMG biofeedback to support the treatment of dysphagia. Designed for speech-language pathologists and rehabilitation clinicians, it delivers targeted stimulation to help patients strengthen swallowing muscles and restore function. VitalStim treatment operates in Co-Contraction mode with up to four simultaneous channels, while VMS treatment allows clinicians to customize protocols by adjusting frequency, phase duration, and work/rest timing to mirror natural swallowing sequences.
Beyond stimulation, the system integrates real-time sEMG biofeedback with both visual and auditory feedback to increase patient engagement and effort during therapy. Built-in instructional videos, an anatomical dysphagia image library, Bluetooth screen mirroring, and exportable treatment data make VitalStim Plus a comprehensive, patient-focused platform built for measurable clinical outcomes.
Key Features
- VitalStim NMES Treatment: Delivers the VitalStim waveform in Co-Contraction mode - up to four channels stimulate concurrently and pause simultaneously for consistent, coordinated therapy.
- VMS Treatment Mode: Fully customizable protocols with adjustable phase duration, frequency, and work/rest time. Sequencing across channels mirrors the natural swallowing pattern.
- sEMG Biofeedback: Measures electrical signals in swallowing muscles, displaying them on screen and amplifying them into auditory cues - boosting patient effort and providing objective documentation for outcome tracking.
- sEMG + Triggered Stimulation: Patient-initiated exercise mode that switches to NMES once the patient reaches a preset sEMG threshold, increasing exercise intensity and effort load.
- Built-In Education Videos: Includes guided video demonstrations of key dysphagia exercises including the Masako Exercise, Mendelsohn Maneuver, Supraglottic Maneuver, and electrode placement options.
- Anatomical Dysphagia Library: On-device image library covering anatomy, pathology, and therapeutic treatment options to support patient education during sessions.
- Bluetooth Screen Mirroring: Projects the live treatment display onto a computer or tablet, enabling clinicians to guide exercises and increase patient participation in real time.
- Exportable Treatment Data: Stimulation and sEMG data can be stored, displayed, and exported to a PC for progress tracking and clinical report generation.
- Up to 4 Channels: Multi-channel capability allows simultaneous treatment across multiple electrode sites for comprehensive dysphagia rehabilitation protocols.

FAQ
Who is the VitalStim Plus intended for?
The VitalStim Plus is designed exclusively for use by licensed healthcare professionals, including speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and other qualified rehabilitation clinicians. It is not intended for home or consumer use. Proper training and certification in VitalStim therapy is recommended before clinical application.
What is the difference between VitalStim and VMS treatment modes?
VitalStim treatment delivers the proprietary VitalStim waveform in Co-Contraction mode, where up to four channels stimulate and pause simultaneously. VMS (Voluntary Muscle Stimulation) treatment offers greater customization - clinicians can adjust phase duration, frequency, and work/rest timing, and sequence stimulation across channels to more closely replicate the natural swallowing pattern. VMS is well-suited for patients who benefit from individualized, stage-specific swallowing protocols.
How does sEMG biofeedback help patients during therapy?
Surface electromyography (sEMG) measures the electrical activity of swallowing muscles and displays it in real time on the device screen. That signal is also amplified into auditory feedback the patient can hear. This dual feedback loop increases patient awareness and effort during exercises. The sEMG + Triggered Stimulation mode takes it a step further - when the patient's muscle activity reaches a clinician-set threshold, the device automatically switches to stimulation mode to add exercise intensity and challenge.
Can I use Bluetooth mirroring during a live treatment session?
Yes. The VitalStim Plus features built-in Bluetooth screen mirroring that projects the live treatment display onto a connected computer or tablet. This allows clinicians to guide patients through exercises while both the clinician and patient can clearly see the biofeedback in real time, improving communication and engagement during the session.
Does the VitalStim Plus come with electrodes?
The standard accessories included with the VitalStim Plus do not list electrodes as a bundled item - electrodes are typically ordered separately as consumables. Please refer to the VitalStim Electrodes User Manual (available for download above) for compatible electrode options, or contact us at service@omahasportsandgames.com for purchasing guidance.
