FAQ
What is the difference between Class B/SO (SOTDMA) and standard Class B AIS?
Standard Class B AIS uses CSTDMA (Carrier Sense Time Division Multiple Access), which yields transmission time opportunistically and can be bumped by other traffic. Class B/SO uses SOTDMA (Self-Organized TDMA), the same protocol used by Class A commercial vessels. This means the MDA-6 reserves its transmission slots in advance, resulting in higher transmission priority, longer range, and more consistent performance - especially in congested waterways.
Does the MDA-6 require a VHF antenna?
Yes, an AIS transceiver like the MDA-6 requires a VHF antenna to transmit and receive AIS signals. A dedicated AIS VHF antenna or a splitter connected to your existing VHF antenna is recommended. The unit includes an external GPS antenna, but the VHF antenna is sold separately.
Can I use the MDA-6 with my existing chartplotter?
Yes. The MDA-6 supports NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 connectivity, which are the two most common standards used by chartplotters from Garmin, Raymarine, Furuno, Navionics, and others. Simply connect via the appropriate interface for your system and AIS targets will appear on your plotter's chart display.
What does the built-in VDR capability do?
VDR stands for Voyage Data Recorder. The built-in VDR in the MDA-6 logs AIS and voyage data, which can be useful for post-incident review, compliance documentation, or simply reviewing your track and traffic history after a passage.
Is the MDA-6 approved for use in U.S. waters?
Yes. The SI-TEX MDA-6 is certified by the FCC and USCG, making it fully approved for use in U.S. waters. It also holds IEC 62287-2 certification for international use.
