SI-TEX MDA-1 Metadata Class B AIS Transceiver with Internal GPS

Description

The SI-TEX MDA-1 is a next-generation Class B AIS transceiver module built around advanced Rmax technology, delivering state-of-the-art signal processing and real-time AIS message decoding for vessels of any size. Compact and rugged, this unit packs a fully integrated 50-channel GPS smart antenna into a waterproof housing - eliminating the need for a separate external GPS source. Whether you're a cruiser, commercial operator, or charter captain, the MDA-1 gives you reliable situational awareness so you can see other vessels and be seen by them.

Designed for seamless plug-and-play integration, the MDA-1 connects effortlessly to chartplotters, radars, and onboard PCs via built-in NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 interfaces. Its ultra-compact footprint and USB power option make it one of the most versatile and easy-to-install AIS solutions on the market today. Please note: this unit must be programmed with your vessel's MMSI number prior to use.

Manuals & Guides

FAQ

What does "must be programmed" mean?

The MDA-1 requires your vessel's MMSI (Maritime Mobile Service Identity) number to be programmed into the unit before it can transmit on the AIS network. Your MMSI is a unique 9-digit identifier assigned to your vessel. You can obtain one through organizations like BoatUS or Sea Tow (for recreational vessels) or through the FCC (for commercial vessels). Programming is typically done via a computer before installation. Please ensure this step is completed before deploying the unit.

Does the MDA-1 require an external GPS antenna?

No. The MDA-1 features a built-in 50-channel GPS smart antenna, so no external GPS source is required. This simplifies installation and reduces the number of components you need to manage onboard.

What is the difference between Class A and Class B AIS?

Class A AIS is a mandatory system used on commercial vessels over 300 gross tons and all passenger vessels. It transmits at higher power (12.5W) and at more frequent intervals. Class B AIS, like the MDA-1, is designed for recreational and smaller commercial vessels. It transmits at lower power (2W) and less frequently, but still provides full receive capability so you can see all Class A and Class B traffic around you. For most recreational and smaller commercial boaters, Class B is the appropriate and cost-effective choice.

Is the MDA-1 compatible with my chartplotter?

The MDA-1 features both NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 interfaces, which are the two dominant marine electronics communication standards. This means it is compatible with the vast majority of modern chartplotters, multi-function displays, and navigation software from brands like Garmin, Raymarine, Furuno, Navionics, and others. It also connects to onboard PCs and radars. Refer to your chartplotter's documentation to confirm which interface type it supports.

Can the USB port be used for data as well as power?

The USB interface on the MDA-1 is primarily used to power the module, offering an additional flexible power source option during installation. For data connectivity, use the NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000 interfaces. Consult the user manual for full details on USB functionality.
