Intercom, Radio & Mount Options - Which to Choose
- STX Stereo Remote Head: The top-tier intercom option. Delivers true stereo music, Bluetooth connectivity, and VOX dimming. The remote head design lets you tuck the intercom body out of sight while keeping controls easily accessible - ideal for riders who want the cleanest possible cockpit and best audio experience.
- STX Stereo (Standard Body): Same great STX Stereo audio and Bluetooth performance in a traditional all-in-one body mount. Great for those who want premium stereo sound with a straightforward, compact install.
- 696 PLUS: The dependable workhorse intercom with Bluetooth and VOX music-dimming. Clear, reliable intercom communication without the stereo upgrade - a smart choice for riders who prioritize communication over music quality and want a proven, no-fuss setup.
- M1 VHF Business Band Radio: Licensed business band radio for professional or club use where dedicated, interference-free channels are needed. Requires a Business Band license. Best for organized groups, guided tours, and commercial operations. Custom programming available via RT Systems software.
- G1 GMRS Radio: General Mobile Radio Service radio - no complex licensing required beyond a standard GMRS license (one license covers the whole family). Ideal for recreational trail riders and families who want easy, accessible radio communication. Note: cannot be programmed outside the GMRS spectrum.
- Top Mount: Mounts the intercom and radio in an elevated position for easy visibility and quick access. Works with the Remote Head intercom style for a clean, high-placement install on the KRX roll cage or overhead structure.
- Dash Mount: Positions the radio and intercom within the dash area for a streamlined, integrated cockpit look. A natural choice for riders who prefer a low-profile, within-reach setup.

FAQ
Do I need a license to use this communication kit?
Yes, a license is required for both radio options. The M1 VHF Business Band radio requires a Business Band (Part 90) license. The G1 GMRS radio requires a GMRS license, which is issued by the FCC and covers the entire immediate family under a single license. Contact Rugged Radios or visit their website for guidance on obtaining the appropriate license before operating your radio.
Are helmet kits or headsets included with this kit?
No - helmet wiring kits and headsets are sold separately. To hear and speak through the intercom system, each rider will need a compatible headset or helmet kit. Rugged Radios offers a wide range of options including wired helmet kits, the ULTIMATE Alpha Audio Stereo Headset, and the AlphaBass Carbon Fiber Headset, which can be added to your order at the time of purchase.
What is the difference between the STX Stereo and the 696 PLUS intercom?
The STX Stereo delivers true stereo music output, giving you a noticeably richer audio experience when streaming music via Bluetooth. The 696 PLUS is a proven, reliable intercom with Bluetooth and VOX dimming that focuses on clear communication without the stereo audio upgrade. Both intercoms work with compatible headsets and helmet kits. If music quality matters to you, go with the STX Stereo. If communication performance is your primary goal, the 696 PLUS is a solid, cost-effective choice.
What does the Remote Head version of the STX Stereo do differently?
The Remote Head version separates the intercom's main body from its control head. The body (with the radio hardware) can be mounted in a hidden or out-of-the-way location, while the compact control head is placed where the driver can easily reach it. This results in a cleaner, less cluttered cockpit while maintaining full control over intercom and audio functions. It's especially popular with riders who value a tidy, professional-looking install.
What is the difference between the M1 VHF Business Band and the G1 GMRS radio?
The M1 VHF Business Band radio operates on licensed commercial frequencies, offering dedicated, less congested channels - ideal for organized groups, guided operations, or commercial use. It requires a Business Band license and can be custom programmed via RT Systems software. The G1 GMRS radio operates on GMRS frequencies, which are widely used by recreational UTV and off-road riders. GMRS requires a simple FCC license (one license covers your whole family) and is the most popular choice for casual trail riding. Note that the G1 cannot be programmed outside the GMRS frequency spectrum.
Is this kit difficult to install on the Kawasaki Teryx KRX 1000?
This kit is designed specifically for the Kawasaki Teryx KRX 1000 and includes a vehicle-specific mount for a straightforward, factory-style installation. Multiple installation guides and video tutorials are available for download, covering everything from the full kit installation to individual component setup. Most riders with basic mechanical experience can complete the install at home. If you prefer professional installation, any authorized UTV dealer or off-road accessory shop should be able to handle it.
