Mettler Auto*Therm 391 Shortwave Diathermy Unit with 14 cm Drum, Arm & Cart
Description
The Mettler Auto*Therm 391 is a professional-grade shortwave diathermy (SWD) system designed to deliver deep, penetrating therapeutic heat to muscles and deep tissues. Built on Mettler Electronics' decades of diathermy expertise dating back to 1968, this unit combines automatic tuning technology with a multi-joint arm, 14 cm inductive coil drum applicator, and a heavy-duty treatment cart for a complete clinical solution. Shortwave diathermy reaches areas and depths that other thermal modalities simply cannot match, making it a standout tool in any rehabilitation or physical therapy practice.
The complete cart-based system provides ample storage space and a professional footprint that integrates seamlessly into clinical environments. Both continuous and pulsed modes are available, giving clinicians the flexibility to deliver thermal or non-thermal treatments based on each patient's needs. As the only unattended treatment modality approved for use in the U.S., the Auto*Therm 391 allows clinicians to attend to other patients while treatment is running.
Key Features
- Deep Tissue Shortwave Diathermy: Penetrates deeper and treats a larger surface area than ultrasound or other thermal modalities - ideal for large muscle groups and joints.
- Continuous & Pulsed Modes: Continuous mode delivers thermal deep heat; pulsed mode provides mechanical effects without thermal properties, similar to pulsed ultrasound.
- 14 cm Inductive Coil Drum Applicator: Provides broad, even coverage for large treatment areas using inductive coil diathermy technology.
- Multi-Joint Articulating Arm: Flexible positioning arm allows precise placement of the drum applicator over virtually any body area.
- Automatic Tuning: Simplifies setup and operation so clinicians can focus on the patient, not the equipment.
- Unattended Treatment Capability: The only modality in the U.S. approved for unattended use, freeing clinicians to treat additional patients simultaneously.
- Heavy-Duty Treatment Cart Included: Cart features ample storage space and a sturdy, professional design built for daily clinical use.
- CPT Code Reimbursable: Diathermy has its own CPT billing code, supporting insurance reimbursement for treatments.
- 2-Year Warranty: Backed by a 2-year unit warranty (1 year on applicators and accessories) from a trusted American manufacturer.
- Weight: 60 lbs. (27.3 kg): Solid, stable construction that stays in place during treatment while remaining manageable for clinical repositioning.

FAQ
Why would I use diathermy instead of ultrasound?
Ultrasound is very effective for treating small, specific areas, but diathermy treats a much larger surface area and penetrates much deeper into tissues. If your patient needs broad, deep-tissue heat - such as for a large muscle group or a complex joint - diathermy is the superior choice.
Is diathermy treatment reimbursable by insurance?
Yes. Diathermy has its own CPT billing code, which means it can be submitted for insurance reimbursement just like other established therapeutic modalities. Contact your billing department or payer for specific coverage details.
What is the difference between continuous and pulsed diathermy?
Continuous mode delivers thermal energy - genuine deep heat - to the targeted tissue. Pulsed mode provides the mechanical effects of diathermy without generating significant heat, similar to how pulsed ultrasound works. Pulsed mode is often used when thermal treatment is contraindicated, such as in acute inflammatory conditions.
Can diathermy be used over a patient's clothing?
Mettler recommends removing clothing from the treatment area and placing a terry cloth towel directly on the skin. The drum applicator is then placed on top of the towel for treatment. This ensures optimal energy delivery and patient safety.
Do I need to worry about metal implants when using diathermy?
In continuous mode, metal objects in or near the treatment area can heat up and pose a risk. In pulsed mode, the unit does not have the capability to heat metal. Always screen patients for metal implants before treatment and follow standard clinical contraindication protocols.
Does the diathermy unit need to be isolated in a separate room?
No. With today's technology and modern safety requirements, the Auto*Therm 391 does not need to be isolated in a separate room. It can be used in a standard clinical treatment environment.
Can clinicians leave the room during treatment?
Yes. Diathermy is the only unattended treatment modality approved in the United States, meaning the clinician can attend to other patients while the Auto*Therm 391 is running a treatment session. This makes it an exceptionally efficient addition to any busy practice.
Does this unit require assembly upon delivery?
The Auto*Therm 391 ships as a complete system including the unit, arm, drum applicator, and cart. Some cart assembly may be required. Please contact us at service@omahasportsandgames.com for specific delivery and setup details.
