House of Staunton Electronic Sensory Chess Board (E-Board)

Description

The House of Staunton Electronic Sensory Chess Board is a cutting-edge digital chess board designed and engineered in the USA by avid chess players. Using high-frequency radio identification (RFID) technology, the board identifies every piece on the board in real time - a significant leap beyond older, unreliable sensory methods used by competing boards. Whether you play casually at home or compete on platforms like Chess.com and Lichess, this e-board bridges the physical and digital chess worlds seamlessly.

Compatible with a wide range of software including ZMF, ChessKing Connect, Chess for Android, ChessBase, Fritz, Shredder, LucasChess, and BearChess, this board offers unmatched versatility for serious players. It supports Blitz play with its rapid multi-scan-per-second capability, connects reliably via USB to any Windows PC, and pairs with the Tap N Set-Pro clock for a complete tournament-ready setup. Choose between the standard version and the LED-equipped upgrade - and pair with your preferred weighted chess piece set for a fully personalized playing experience.

Key Features

  • RFID Piece Detection: Identifies all chess pieces using high-frequency radio identification technology - more reliable than older capacitive or magnetic methods.
  • Chess.com & Lichess Compatible: Supports the ChessConnect Plugin to play online via Chess.com and Lichess.org directly from the physical board.
  • Board Size: 22.7" x 22.7" x 0.8": Full-size board with 2.25" squares, ideal for standard weighted chess pieces.
  • Burmese Rosewood & White Maple Squares: Premium hardwood construction with a Burmese Rosewood frame and 3mm black delimiter between squares.
  • Matte Finish with Non-Slip Feet: Four rubber foot pads on the back keep the board stable during play.
  • Blitz-Ready Scanning: Executes multiple position scans per second so fast-paced Blitz games register moves accurately.
  • Broad Software Compatibility: Works with ZMF, ChessKing Connect, Chess for Android, ChessBase, Fritz, Shredder, Arena, CB-Emu, LucasChess, and BearChess.
  • Reliable USB Connection: Plug-and-play USB connectivity tested with Windows 7, 10, and 11.
  • Tap N Set-Pro Clock Integration: Connects to the Tap N Set-Pro double-display clock (sold separately) - clock time is sent to the PC automatically.
  • Patent-Protected Design: U.S. Patent 11,369,862.
  • Piece Sensor Installation: Sensors can be installed on any weighted chess set, giving you flexibility to use your existing pieces.

LED vs. No LED - Which to Choose

  • Without LEDs (starting at $695): The standard sensory e-board experience - full RFID piece detection, USB connectivity, and broad software compatibility without LED indicators. Best for experienced players who don't need visual move prompts and want a cleaner, more traditional board aesthetic.
  • With LEDs ($795): Adds a bright blue 5mm LED indicator in every square for clear, easy-to-see move guidance. Expanded online platform support includes Chess.com, Lichess.org, Noctie.ai, and Chessiverse. Ideal for players who want visual feedback, are learning, or want enhanced integration with streaming and coaching tools.

Piece Options & Which to Choose

  • Grand Chess Pieces (Grandmaster Series, 4.0" King): Ebonized Boxwood and Natural Boxwood with a 4.0" king and 1.625" base. Median set weight of 46 oz. A well-proportioned, classic Staunton design suited for most players and the 2.25" board squares.
  • Dubrovnik Players Choice Chess Pieces (3.75" King): A reproduction of the iconic Drueke Players Choice design in Ebonized Boxwood and Natural Boxwood. 3.75" king, 1.625" base, and a lighter 36.1 oz median weight - ideal for players who prefer the historic Drueke profile and a slightly lighter feel.
  • Ambassador Chess Pieces (Artemisa Series, 4.5" King): Luxury Blood Rosewood and Natural Boxwood construction with a commanding 4.5" king and 1.75" base. At 60.0 oz median weight, these are the heaviest and most premium option - ideal for collectors and players who want a truly luxurious playing experience.

FAQ

What is the difference between the Without LEDs and With LEDs versions?

The Without LEDs version provides full RFID-based piece detection, USB connectivity, and broad software compatibility with a clean traditional look. The With LEDs version adds a bright blue 5mm LED indicator in every square to visually highlight legal moves and piece positions, and also expands online platform support to include Noctie.ai and Chessiverse in addition to Chess.com and Lichess. If you want visual move guidance or plan to use the board for coaching or streaming, the LED version is the better choice.

Does this board work with Mac or is it Windows only?

The ZMF software has been tested and confirmed to work with Windows 7, Windows 10, and Windows 11. The Chess for Android app can be used on Android devices as well. Mac compatibility is not officially stated - if you primarily use a Mac, we recommend reaching out to us at service@omahasportsandgames.com before purchasing.

Can I use my own existing chess pieces with this board?

Yes - the piece sensors can be easily installed on any weighted chess set, so you are not limited to the pieces offered with this board. This makes it a great option if you already own a quality weighted set and simply want to add electronic sensory capability.

What software does this e-board work with?

The board is compatible with a wide range of programs including ZMF board software, ChessKing Connect, Chess for Android, ChessBase, Fritz, Shredder, Arena, CB-Emu, LucasChess, and BearChess (Lanosoft). It also supports the ChessConnect Plugin for playing online via Chess.com and Lichess.org. Graham's drivers are used to connect to UCI/Winboard engines.

Is the Tap N Set-Pro clock included?

No, the Tap N Set-Pro clock is sold separately. However, the e-board is fully compatible with it - once connected, the clock time is automatically sent to the PC, and the clock can change sides automatically when using the appropriate software settings.

Can I play Blitz chess with this board?

Absolutely. The board executes multiple position scans per second, making it fast enough to accurately register moves during Blitz games. This is one of the key advantages of the RFID technology used here compared to slower or less reliable sensor systems.
