Freenotes Duet Metallophone & Marimba - Park and Playground Instrument
Description
The Freenotes Duet is a one-of-a-kind outdoor musical instrument that combines a metallophone and a marimba into a single, beautifully crafted installation. Designed for parks, playgrounds, schools, and public spaces, it offers two distinct tonal experiences - the bright, sustaining resonance of the metallophone on the left and the earthy, percussive warmth of the marimba on the right. With 18 notes spanning both A Minor and C Major Pentatonic scales, the Duet is tuned to encourage natural harmony, making every interaction musical and rewarding.
Built for multiple players at once and equipped with four mallets, the Duet is an invitation for shared musical discovery. Whether for a curious child exploring rhythm or a group of adults improvising together, this instrument brings people together through sound. It's also fully compatible with the Harmony Method, an optional standards-based educational curriculum that transforms the instrument into a hands-on learning experience.

Mount Type & Post Material Options & Which to Choose
- In-Ground Mount: The most permanent and stable installation option - the post is set directly into the ground with concrete. Ideal for dedicated park or playground installations where the instrument won't need to be relocated.
- Surface Mount: Bolts directly to an existing concrete pad or hard surface. A great choice when a concrete footer isn't practical or when the instrument is being added to an existing paved area like a plaza, patio, or schoolyard.
- Portable Mount: Designed for mobility and flexibility - perfect for temporary installations, events, or locations where the instrument may need to be moved seasonally or between sites.
- Recycled Plastic Post: An eco-friendly post option made from recycled materials. Resistant to rot, splinters, and corrosion - ideal for high-moisture environments and sustainability-focused projects.
- Steel Post: A classic, heavy-duty post option offering exceptional structural strength. Well-suited for high-traffic public installations where long-term rigidity is a priority.

FAQ
What is the difference between the metallophone and marimba sides of the Duet?
The left-hand side is a metallophone with anodized aluminum notes, producing a bright, sustaining, chime-like tone in the A Minor scale. The right-hand side is a marimba with coated fiberglass bars, delivering a warmer, earthier, more percussive sound in the C Major Pentatonic scale. Together, they complement each other beautifully and make it easy for two players to create harmonious music without any musical training.
Is this instrument suitable for all ages?
Yes! The Duet is designed for inclusive play across all age groups. Its pentatonic and minor scale tuning means that virtually any combination of notes sounds pleasing, making it accessible and rewarding for young children, adults, and seniors alike. Finished height can also vary based on mounting and post configuration to better suit the target age group.
Can this instrument stay outside year-round?
Absolutely. The Duet is engineered specifically for permanent outdoor installation. The anodized aluminum and coated fiberglass notes, along with the choice of steel or recycled plastic posts, are all selected for weather resistance and long-term durability in outdoor environments.
What is the Harmony Method, and do I need it?
The Harmony Method is an optional, standards-based educational curriculum developed by Freenotes Harmony Park that pairs with their instruments to create structured, hands-on music learning experiences. It's a great add-on for schools, community centers, or any installation where guided learning is a goal - but the Duet is fully enjoyable and musical on its own without it.
Which mounting option should I choose?
Choose In-Ground if you want a permanent, maximally stable installation set in concrete - best for dedicated park or playground sites. Choose Surface Mount if you're installing on an existing concrete pad or paved area and don't want to dig. Choose Portable if you need the flexibility to relocate the instrument for events, seasonal use, or multi-site programs.
Do the mallets come included with the instrument?
Yes - the Duet ships with four 80-durometer black mallets, which are the ideal hardness for producing the best tone from both the metallophone and marimba sides. Having four mallets means two players can each use both hands simultaneously.
