ED80-FCD100 Series Air-Spaced Triplet Refractor Telescope and Field Flattener f/5 to f/7
Description
The Explore Scientific ED80-FCD100 Series Air-Spaced Triplet Refractor Telescope with Field Flattener is a high-performance optical instrument designed for astronomers and astrophotographers who demand crisp, color-accurate views across the entire field of view. At the heart of this telescope is genuine HOYA FCD100 extra-low dispersion (ED) glass, delivering chromatic aberration correction and color fidelity that rivals the renowned Ohara FPL-53 glass. The air-spaced triplet optical design virtually eliminates false color, while proprietary EMD multi-layer coatings maximize light transmission for brilliantly sharp images. Paired with the Field Flattener (f/5 to f/7), this bundle is purpose-built to produce perfectly flat, pin-sharp star fields from edge to edge - ideal for wide-field astrophotography.
With an 80mm aperture and 480mm focal length, the ED80 strikes the perfect balance between portability and optical power, revealing stunning lunar details, planetary rings, and deep-sky objects with high contrast. Weighing just 7.5 lbs, it excels as a grab-and-go visual scope or as a dedicated guide scope alongside a larger imaging rig. Whether you're shooting the Milky Way, tracking deep-sky nebulae, or guiding a heavy payload, this telescope and field flattener combo delivers the performance serious imagers expect.
Key Features
- HOYA FCD100 ED Glass: Genuine extra-low dispersion glass comparable to Ohara FPL-53 - delivers exceptional chromatic aberration correction and true-to-life color fidelity.
- Air-Spaced Triplet Design: Three-element air-spaced optical design virtually eliminates chromatic aberrations for high-contrast, color-pure views.
- Field Flattener f/5 to f/7 Included: Corrects field curvature across the full image circle for tack-sharp stars edge-to-edge - essential for wide-field astrophotography.
- EMD Multi-Layer Coatings: Proprietary coatings optimize light transmission across the optical path for brilliant, high-fidelity images.
- 80mm Aperture / 480mm Focal Length: Versatile optical specs at f/6 that balance grab-and-go portability with sharp planetary and deep-sky performance.
- 2.5" Hexagonal Focuser: Rugged and precise, this focuser supports imaging payloads up to 10 lbs - compatible with heavy camera and accessory setups.
- Lightweight at 7.5 lbs (3.4 kg): Easy to transport, quick to set up, and mountable on a wide range of equatorial and alt-az mounts.
- Vixen Dovetail: Standard Vixen-style dovetail ensures broad compatibility with popular mount systems.
- Dual-Purpose Design: Functions as a standalone visual and imaging scope or as a guide scope alongside larger telescopes in astrophotography rigs.
- Dew Shield Included: Integrated dew shield helps protect the objective lens and reduce stray light during long imaging sessions.

FAQ
What does the Field Flattener do, and why do I need it?
A field flattener corrects the natural curvature of the focal plane that occurs with most refractor telescopes. Without it, stars near the edges of your camera sensor can appear distorted or out of focus even when the center is sharp. The included f/5-to-f/7 field flattener ensures pin-sharp stars across the entire image circle, making it essential for wide-field astrophotography with full-frame or APS-C cameras.
Is this telescope good for visual observing, or is it primarily for astrophotography?
It excels at both. The HOYA FCD100 ED glass and air-spaced triplet design produce crisp, color-accurate views that visual observers will appreciate for lunar, planetary, and deep-sky work. For astrophotography, the combination of the triplet optics and field flattener makes this a capable wide-field imaging system ready to use right out of the box.
Can this telescope be used as a guide scope?
Yes - the ED80's lightweight 7.5 lb body and Vixen dovetail make it an excellent candidate for use as an autoguider scope alongside a larger imaging telescope. Its 480mm focal length provides a useful guiding field, and the rugged 2.5" hexagonal focuser holds position reliably under the demands of long imaging sessions.
What mounts is this telescope compatible with?
The ED80-FCD100 comes with a standard Vixen dovetail, which is compatible with a wide range of equatorial and alt-azimuth mounts that accept Vixen-style saddles. It is also available in a bundle with the Explore Scientific iEXOS-100-02 PMC-Eight Equatorial Tracker if you need a complete mount solution.
What is the warranty on this telescope?
This telescope comes with a limited warranty from Explore Scientific. To activate full coverage, you must register your product within 60 days of purchase. Please refer to the Explore Scientific Warranty Policy for complete terms and conditions.
