Cabrinha Drifter Apex Kite for Surf, Foil and Freeride 2026
Description
For over a decade, the Cabrinha Drifter has set the benchmark for wave riding - defining what it means to ride with true freedom on the water. Its legendary slackline drift, lightning-fast steering response, and effortless bar feel have made it the go-to reference for surfers, foilers, and freestyle riders pushing their limits at every level. The 2026 Drifter Apex builds on that heritage with upgraded Apex-series materials and refined construction throughout, making it smoother, stronger, and more consistent than any Drifter before it.
While the Drifter's DNA is rooted in surf, the 2026 edition pushes well beyond the wave. With exceptional pop, predictable power delivery, and confidence-inspiring landings, it has become a podium-level tool for strapless freestyle progression. From barreling pits to big airs, full rail hacks to strapless rotations, this is the kite for riders who refuse to compromise between surf, foil, and freestyle performance.
Key Features
- Slackline Drift: The original and still the best - the Drifter drifts down the line with you so you can focus entirely on the wave ahead.
- 3-Strut Moderate Aspect Ratio Hybrid Design: Chopped surf/drift wing tip design delivers a perfect balance of turning speed, stability, and drift performance.
- Ultra HT Leading Edge Material: Exclusive to the Apex series, this proprietary material is strong, stable, and exceptionally responsive - reducing weight while delivering incredibly low elongation for reactive steering.
- Teijin D2 Ripstop Canopy: Lightweight with exceptional bias control and recovery, working hand-in-hand with Ultra HT to deliver next-level performance and reactivity.
- Apex Bridle: Thinner, lower-elongation bridle with reduced-diameter lines increases airflow efficiency and delivers optimal reactive steering with zero pulley complexity.
- Pure Form Panels: High-accuracy aerofoil panels ensure the cleanest leading edge entry for maximum efficiency and power consistency across the wind range.
- 2026 Airframe Inflation System: Single-point inflation engineered for simplicity, speed, and global compatibility - quick to set up, quick to pack down, reliable in any condition.
- Durable TPU Leading Edge Bumpers: Bullet-proof bumpers protect the canopy-to-LE sewing from hard surface abrasion, keeping the kite looking and performing like new.
- Trailing Edge EVA Rigidity Battens: Add structure and stability to the trailing edge for cleaner aerodynamic performance and consistent feel across wind conditions.
- Rapid Power Control: Dial power on and off at will to maximize your time on every wave, no matter the size or shape.

FAQ
What makes the Drifter Apex different from the standard Drifter?
The Apex designation means this kite uses Cabrinha's premium Apex-series materials - specifically the Ultra HT leading edge and strut material and the Teijin D2 Ripstop canopy. These are exclusive to the Apex line and provide reduced weight, lower elongation, and superior durability compared to standard construction. The Apex Bridle also uses thinner, lower-elongation lines for sharper, more reactive steering.
Is the Drifter Apex good for foiling, or is it only for wave riding?
The 2026 Drifter Apex is an excellent foil kite. Its slackline drift, smooth power delivery, and responsive steering make it ideal for kite foiling - especially in onshore or cross-shore conditions. The lighter sizes (9M-11M) are particularly popular for foil sessions in moderate winds, while the smaller sizes suit foilers who ride in stronger conditions.
Can I use the Drifter Apex for strapless freestyle tricks?
Absolutely. While the Drifter is best known for its wave performance, the 2026 version has been refined with exceptional pop, predictable bar feel, and confidence-inspiring landings that make it a serious strapless freestyle weapon. Elite riders like Alby Rondina have taken it to the top of competition podiums in strapless freestyle events.
Which size should I choose?
Size selection depends on your local wind conditions and your body weight. The wind range chart on this page is based on a 75kg rider - if you are lighter you can typically go down a size, and if you are heavier you may want to go up. Consider the wind speeds you ride most often: the 7M-9M range covers most common wave and foil sessions, while the 10M-11M suits lighter wind days or heavier riders.
Does the Drifter Apex come with a bar and pump?
The Drifter Apex is sold as a kite only. A Cabrinha Unify Control System bar and Pump STD/XL are available as add-on accessories and can be selected when adding to your cart. If you need a complete setup, we recommend pairing the kite with the Cabrinha Unify bar for the best compatibility.
What does "slackline drift" mean?
Slackline drift is a term the Drifter pioneered in kiteboarding. When you ride down the line on a wave, you often move in the same direction as the wind, which normally causes the kite's lines to go slack and the kite to lose power or fall from the sky. The Drifter is specifically designed to drift forward with you in the window, staying aloft and controlled even on slack lines - letting you focus entirely on riding the wave rather than managing the kite.
