10-inch Hybrid Truss Tube Dobsonian Telescope
Description
The Explore Scientific 10-inch Hybrid Truss Tube Dobsonian Telescope is built for serious deep-sky observers who want big aperture performance without sacrificing portability. Its hybrid design combines a solid-tube upper assembly - protecting the secondary mirror from dust and stray light - with the lightweight, tool-free truss tube structure that makes setup fast and transport simple. The massive 254mm (10-inch) primary mirror pulls in enough light to reveal faint galaxies, nebulae, star clusters, and crisp lunar and planetary detail that smaller instruments simply can't match.
Whether you're a dedicated backyard observer or a serious amateur astronomer heading to a dark-sky site, this Dobsonian delivers performance well above its price point. A robust single-speed focuser and large altitude bearings mounted to a rigid aluminum rocker box provide silky-smooth tracking even at high magnifications. The included accessory kit - with two Plossl eyepieces, a red-dot finder, collimation tool, moon filter, star map, and planisphere - means you're ready to observe the moment the telescope is assembled.
Key Features
- 254mm (10-inch) Primary Mirror: Gathers exceptional light for vivid views of deep-sky objects, planets, and the Moon - reaching a theoretical limiting magnitude of 14.7.
- Hybrid Truss Tube Design: Solid upper cage assembly protects the secondary mirror while the truss tube structure keeps the telescope lightweight and easy to break down for transport.
- Tool-Free Assembly: Traditional truss Dobsonian setup - no tools required - gets you from the car to observing in minutes.
- f/5 Focal Ratio / 1,270mm Focal Length: A versatile, fast focal ratio ideal for both wide-field deep-sky views and higher-magnification planetary work.
- Single-Speed Focuser: Delivers smooth, precise focus control for both visual observing and astrophotography attempts.
- Large Altitude Bearings and Aluminum Rocker Box: Provides fluid, balanced motion across the sky with minimal vibration at any magnification - up to a theoretical 500x maximum.
- 9-Point Mirror Cell: Supports the primary mirror at 9 points for consistent, accurate collimation and optimal image quality.
- Two Plossl Eyepieces (25mm and 10mm): Paired eyepieces cover wide-field and higher-power views right out of the box - no additional purchases needed to get started.
- Complete Accessory Kit Included: Red-dot finder, collimation tool, moon filter, star map, and planisphere provide everything a new or experienced observer needs from night one.
- Limited Warranty: Backed by Explore Scientific's limited warranty - register your product within 60 days to activate full coverage.

Why You'll Love It
The Explore Scientific 10-inch Hybrid Truss Tube Dobsonian is the kind of telescope that keeps calling you outside - night after night. Its massive aperture opens up a universe of targets that smaller scopes can only hint at, from the delicate spiral arms of distant galaxies to the ring of Saturn hanging in a dark sky. Explore Scientific has a long-standing reputation among amateur astronomers for producing high-performance optics at prices that don't require a research-grant budget, and this Dobsonian is a prime example of that philosophy. The hybrid truss design means you won't dread hauling it to a dark-sky site - it breaks down quickly and fits in most vehicles with room to spare. Whether you're a first-time observer stepping up to serious aperture or a seasoned stargazer looking for a reliable, no-compromise workhorse, this telescope delivers exceptional value and years of dependable use.

FAQ
How difficult is it to assemble this telescope?
Assembly is tool-free and straightforward. The truss poles connect the rocker box mirror assembly to the solid upper cage without any tools required. Most observers have it ready to use in 10-15 minutes, even on their first setup. A collimation tool is included to help align the mirrors before each session.
What can I actually see with a 10-inch Dobsonian?
Quite a lot. The 254mm aperture is enough to reveal the spiral structure of nearby galaxies like M31 and M33, intricate detail in nebulae like the Orion Nebula and the Ring Nebula, globular clusters resolved to individual stars, cloud bands and the Great Red Spot on Jupiter, Saturn's rings and Cassini Division, polar ice caps on Mars, and crisp lunar craters. The theoretical limiting magnitude of 14.7 means thousands of deep-sky objects are within reach under dark skies.
Do I need to collimate the telescope, and is it hard to do?
Yes, reflector telescopes like this Dobsonian do require occasional collimation to align the primary and secondary mirrors for the sharpest images. A collimation tool is included in the kit. The process takes just a few minutes once you've done it a couple of times, and many observers check collimation briefly at the start of each session. There are many helpful guides and videos available online specific to Dobsonian collimation.
Can this telescope fit in a regular car for transport to a dark-sky site?
Yes. The hybrid truss tube design breaks down into two main sections - the rocker box with primary mirror and the separate upper cage assembly - along with the truss poles. The components are compact enough to fit in most SUVs, hatchbacks, or even large sedans with folded seats, making it practical to take to dark-sky locations away from city light pollution.
Is this telescope good for astrophotography?
This Dobsonian is primarily designed for visual observing. It does not include a motorized tracking mount, which is generally considered essential for long-exposure deep-sky astrophotography. It can be used for basic lunar and planetary photography with a smartphone adapter or camera at the eyepiece, but for serious astrophotography, a motorized equatorial or alt-azimuth tracking mount would be a better starting point.
What eyepieces are included, and what magnifications do they give?
The telescope includes a 25mm Plossl eyepiece and a 10mm Plossl eyepiece. With the 1,270mm focal length, the 25mm delivers approximately 51x magnification - great for wide-field views and finding objects. The 10mm delivers approximately 127x magnification, suitable for planetary detail and tighter deep-sky targets. Additional eyepieces can be added later to expand your magnification range.
