FAQ
What is NMEA-0183 and what can I connect to it?
NMEA-0183 is the marine industry's standard data communication protocol. With the GPS-915's two NMEA-0183 ports, you can connect a wide range of compatible devices including chartplotters, autopilots, VHF radios with DSC, AIS transponders, radar systems, and more. This allows the GPS-915 to share your position data with your entire navigation suite.
Is the GPS-915 suitable for offshore or open-ocean use?
Yes. The 72-channel GPS engine provides fast satellite acquisition and robust position tracking even far offshore. The large waypoint and route memory also makes it well suited for extended offshore passages where you need to log many positions and plan complex routes.
Can I use the GPS-915 as a standalone navigator without a chartplotter?
Absolutely. The GPS-915 operates as a self-contained GPS receiver with its own display, waypoint management, route planning, and ship's trail logging. While it doesn't display a chart, it provides all the core navigation data - position, speed, heading, course, and route guidance - directly on its 4.3-inch color screen.
How many waypoints and routes can the GPS-915 store?
The GPS-915 stores up to 10,000 waypoints and 100 routes with up to 50 points per route. This is an exceptionally large memory capacity that suits commercial operators, serious anglers, and cruisers who need to store hundreds of fishing spots, anchorages, or navigation marks.
Does the GPS-915 require professional installation?
Installation complexity will depend on how you plan to integrate it with your existing electronics. Basic operation as a standalone unit is straightforward, but wiring NMEA-0183 connections to other equipment may benefit from a qualified marine electronics technician. We recommend downloading the product manual (available above) for full wiring and installation details.
